Port-Royal at grips with its own casuistry and Pascal’s stand

My contribution to the group working on the theme of “A comparative history of casuistry” looks at a case-study concerning Pascal and the Port-Royal Messieurs. It is unnecessary to repeat that the Pascal of the Provinciales championed the fight against the casuistry and laxity of the Jesuits. The point concerning me however, in Port-Royal at grips with its own casuistry and Pascal’s stand, is rather less well known: viz., the conflict which set Pascal and a sprinkling of exponents from the Jansenist files (Domat and Hermant) against the majority of the solitaires, not least Arnauld and Nicole, on the question of Pope Alexander VII’s formulary. The signature ‘pure et simple’ of the formulary, as requested of nuns and ecclesiastics, implied accepting that five propositions on grace present in Jansen’s Augustinus were heretical. Pascal was intransigent in his defense of efficacious grace and of St. Augustine, this time however denouncing the casuistic feebleness behind the choice of those who had introduced him to the uncompromising Jansenist faith.

All’interno del gruppo di lavoro che ha affrontato il tema “A comparative history of casuistry”, diretto da Carlo Ginzburg, il mio lavoro ha preso per oggetto un ‘case study’ che riguarda Pascal e i Messieurs di Port-Royal. Il Pascal autore delle Provinciales è, inutile ribadirlo, il campione della battaglia contro il casuismo e il lassismo dei gesuiti. Oggetto del mio contributo, Port-Royal at grips with its own casuistry and Pascal stand, è una questione meno nota: il conflitto che oppose Pascal e pochi altri esponenti del mondo giansenista (Domat e Hermant) alla gran parte dei solitaires, e soprattutto a Arnauld e Nicole, sulla questione del formulario di Papa Alessandro VII. La firma pura e semplice del formulario, richiesta alle religiose e agli ecclesiastici, implicava l’accettazione che cinque proposizioni sulla grazia presenti nell’Augustinus di Giansenio fossero eretiche. Pascal assunse una linea intransigente in difesa della grazia efficace e di Sant’Agostino, questa volta però denunciando la debolezza casuistica della scelta dei suoi vecchi maestri.
